Pictures You Can Touch

prints (on paper!!)

prints (on paper!!)

Many years ago (in a galaxy not so far far away) when men roamed the earth in loin cloths and hunted for food down at the watering hole rather than the local 24 hour convenience store- photographs were not taken digitally. When you took a photo you had no idea how it looked until you had a print made from the negative. Weird huh?!?

In this digital age the vast majority of our photos never get past their binary digital state. They are transferred from the sensor to the memory card and then into our computers, displayed on our monitors and sent around the world via the web and email. Never really becoming more than a series of ones and zeroes or small electrical impulses.

Today I got some photographs printed at the lab to give to people for Christmas presents. It suddenly struck me that this was the first time in probably two months I’d visited the photo lab and got any prints done and considering I shoot photographs most days of the week that’s quite a long time. I think there is something special about a printed photograph. Maybe I’m just a sad old romantic but hanging or pinning a print on the wall or placing a photo of a loved one in your wallet is far more rewarding than emailing one to aunt fanny! I would like to explore the whole aspect of printing a fair bit more on this blog . The digital age has brought lots of new options as regards turning your digital virtual images into something more physical and tactile but before we get into all of that I just want to find out if I’m the only person who fails to progress my photos into physical form (I mean print them!!). So beloved reader have your vote and add your thoughts into the comments section. I’ve got a feeling there are going to be a few of us who rarely print?!?

How often do you get prints of your photos?

  1. Actually I only just got my first big 12×8 prints run off – cos I needed them for a competition entry. It’s incredible how much better things look in glossy print than they do on the screen!!

  3. I hadn’t printed anything in ages. Then I decided to print 3 14×11″ pics and frame them for my wife for Christmas (http://twitpic.com/v6jc).

Photos really do look awesome that big. And I listened to some good advice and decided to pick frames that suited each photo rather than my original idea to frame them all the same way.

I’m definitely planning on printing and framing more of my photographs.

I’m also contemplating putting some on http://www.redbubble.com/ but that’s a different thread entirely. :-)

  5. Hi Guys, I’ve printed my stuff once in the last twelve months, and that was for a competition – I didn’t place – And now, those prints are sitting in the envelope they came in, gathering dust. I really should get more gear printed out, and maybe even popped up on my wall. (I use redbubble too, but…)

    Great site fellas..

  7. There’s a machine in my local shopping centre that prints photos for 20p a go (I discovered it before Boots and Jessops got their machines) and, what’s more, it prints them as postcards! It’s not terribly good quality and it seems to crop them a bit but my friends seem to enjoy getting postcards I’ve taken.
Apart from that I haven’t really printed anything in ages.

  9. Last time I printed some pics was for a competition, but I´m planning to order a huge on-line printing of all my 2008 stuff because, as Paul B say, they look different on paper: if the pic is well-done it looks amazing, but also if the photo isn´t as good as you may think (sceen sometimes deceive you) on paper it´s possible to see what´s wrong and to learn for next shot.

(I hope you can understand more o less what I wanted to say…sorry for my crappy english)

  11. No apologies needed! I think we probably have more reason to apologise for our crappy English, than you ;)
