Do You Want Photography to be Your Job?

Work or Fun? Or Both?
Following a conversation I had with a fellow flickrite recently, I was curious as to the role each of us sees photography playing in our own lives in the future – from a financial point of view.
If photography is your passion would you love it to also be your job, or would that spoil the fun for you? Would you rather it just remain a hobby – an escape from the 9 to 5 world? Or maybe you’d like the odd paying gig, just to support your GAS habit? Answers on a postcard please (or you could just take part in the poll below – it’s up to you
).

I’m not sure on this one. Here’s why.
I used to really enjoy making websites in my spare time, heck, I thought it was fun. Soo, I got a full-time job making websites. I now hate it – the job has ground me down so much that I now hate doing anything with my personal websites. The fun has gone.
I’d love to make loads of money from photography, but I fear that the same thing would happen. Uh!
I worry about the same thing Daz – but I think it’s a risk I’d personally be willing to take
My theory though is that generally, well… I don’t want to sway the votes, so I’ll reveal the theory later
Well seeing as I’m doing a degree in photography, I really hope it leads to something that involves me making money from it or that’s a lot of time and a huge debt for nothing!
I do worry about what Daz said but I think as long as I keep a balance between personsal fun photography for myself and work stuff, hopefully it will be ok!
I have the passion for photography but not the skill level, so it’s not viable for me to make money out of it. However, at the moment I’d do any job as long as it wasn’t IT!
ditto to Daz.
although I think i’d like photography to be my primary source of income, I’d be more than happy if it just supported my GAS habit (and find it equally rewarding)!
I really have pleasure when I take photo as a hobby…I’d like to make it a kind of job (not for money, but just to practice in a “serious way” (discovering studio and strobist, model, client’s needs …) but it could scared me. Because when your hobby becomes your work, all changes and, as daz says, you could finally no more liked your first love.
Instead of doing it a job, I would prefer to mak it an huge passion
I know I don’t have GAS nearly as badly as some of you all, but what I’ve made on selling work or services is so hilariously small compared to what I’ve spent over the years. It would be really sweet if it even covered 20% of photographic expenses… Then again, I’d have to market myself or something.
