Do You Want Photography to be Your Job?

Work or Fun? Or Both?
Following a conversation I had with a fellow flickrite recently, I was curious as to the role each of us sees photography playing in our own lives in the future – from a financial point of view.
If photography is your passion would you love it to also be your job, or would that spoil the fun for you? Would you rather it just remain a hobby – an escape from the 9 to 5 world? Or maybe you’d like the odd paying gig, just to support your GAS habit? Answers on a postcard please (or you could just take part in the poll below – it’s up to you
).
What Software Do YOU Use?
Well love it or hate the birth of digital photography means that using software as a post-processing tool has become more common than tap water even for the average joe (or julie) in the street. People either use their choice of software for simple tweaks like cropping and colour correction or they unleash the beast and use it to take a image to new levels, compositing various images into one masterpiece and letting their imagination run wild with the available tools.
Since taking up photography as a major hobby (obsession?) I’ve switched over time from mad and crazy post processing experiments to something of a lighter touch. I now try and make better use of my subjects, camera, environment, and accessories and strive to get the image I want straight out of the camera but it’s still common for me to tweak images and apply colour treatments and crops. For this reason my main post processing tool of choice is adobe lightroom. I do still have photoshop installed for those moments when I want to let my imagination run wild! So what is your software of choice when is comes to post-processing?
We are interested in what tools you use the most. There are lots of choices out on the market these days from free online tools like picnik all the way through to fully loaded costly applications such as photoshop. I’ve tried to list what I expect will be common answers to this question for you to vote on below but please leave a comment with a bit more detail of how and why you use your choice of software and also let me know if I’ve left any out.
Pictures You Can Touch

prints (on paper!!)
Many years ago (in a galaxy not so far far away) when men roamed the earth in loin cloths and hunted for food down at the watering hole rather than the local 24 hour convenience store- photographs were not taken digitally. When you took a photo you had no idea how it looked until you had a print made from the negative. Weird huh?!?
In this digital age the vast majority of our photos never get past their binary digital state. They are transferred from the sensor to the memory card and then into our computers, displayed on our monitors and sent around the world via the web and email. Never really becoming more than a series of ones and zeroes or small electrical impulses.
Today I got some photographs printed at the lab to give to people for Christmas presents. It suddenly struck me that this was the first time in probably two months I’d visited the photo lab and got any prints done and considering I shoot photographs most days of the week that’s quite a long time. I think there is something special about a printed photograph. Maybe I’m just a sad old romantic but hanging or pinning a print on the wall or placing a photo of a loved one in your wallet is far more rewarding than emailing one to aunt fanny! I would like to explore the whole aspect of printing a fair bit more on this blog . The digital age has brought lots of new options as regards turning your digital virtual images into something more physical and tactile but before we get into all of that I just want to find out if I’m the only person who fails to progress my photos into physical form (I mean print them!!). So beloved reader have your vote and add your thoughts into the comments section. I’ve got a feeling there are going to be a few of us who rarely print?!?
