Photography…..It’s My Bag Baby

ok photography is my bag! I absolutely love it but this post is actually going to be more about what’s in my bag.  I thought it would be an interesting idea for some discussion. I’m going to list below what the items are in my bag on a daily basis and go into a bit of detail of why they are in my kit bag. Then you peeps (yes you) (and you at the back there) (yes and you Darren) are going to take a photo of the contents of your kit bag and post them to flickr with descriptions and place a link here in the comments so we can all be nosey and take a look…..sound cool? excellent! (you folks are the best……you really are).

I’ll start by saying that I think I pack pretty light (prove me wrong). The main reason for that is this all fits into my smallish crumpler rucksack which I take everywhere with me….and I mean everywhere. The last thing I need whilst completing my day job (which isn’t sadly as a photographer) is to be lugging round kit that weighs several tonnes, most of my travel is done on foot or public transport so travelling light is essential. The other reason for lack of kit is because I don’t own much anyway. I have light stands and tripods etc but I don’t take these out everyday. Just slows me down. I have excluded my small plastic lunchbox….didn’t think it important.

I’ll work my way round from top left to bottom right.

1. Wallet- Mainly so I can buy coffee and donuts on the move….hey I have my figure to maintain! but could also come in handy to bribe people in positions of importance or prove my identity if questioned.

2. Olympus XA2 – Just the cutest bestest pocket film camera a guy(or gal) could want…fits in the pocket, nice sharp lens…brilliant!! This is usually in my pocket and it gets rotated with my other 35mm cameras. I try to limit myself to carrying one at a time. › Continue reading

New Kids On The Block

Last week was the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Lots of companies turned up as usual and touted their products for the coming year (well I wasn’t there but I guess that’s how it works lol). Not surprisingly there was a fair sprinkling of digital compact camera action on show. Some highlights below.

Olympus are releasing two new weatherproof models the uTough 8000 and 6000. Both models are freezeproof, shockproof and waterproof to varying degrees, the 8000 model being waterproof to a depth of 10m. Excellent for all you fishy photogs out there. No price on these yet but should be released onto the market sometime over the next few months so watch this space.

Casio are launching five new models to their already popular range of compact cameras. The latest offerings feature at the top of the range the EX-FC100 model which is capable of 720p HD movie capture at 1000 frames per second (is it me or is movie capture on cameras gonna be the flavour of 2009?). It also includes the ability to capture 30 still frames at 6 mega pixels in one second using a new burst mode. Prices start at $179 through to $400 for the top model. › Continue reading

Pictures You Can Touch

prints (on paper!!)

prints (on paper!!)

Many years ago (in a galaxy not so far far away) when men roamed the earth in loin cloths and hunted for food down at the watering hole rather than the local 24 hour convenience store- photographs were not taken digitally. When you took a photo you had no idea how it looked until you had a print made from the negative. Weird huh?!?

In this digital age the vast majority of our photos never get past their binary digital state. They are transferred from the sensor to the memory card and then into our computers, displayed on our monitors and sent around the world via the web and email. Never really becoming more than a series of ones and zeroes or small electrical impulses.

Today I got some photographs printed at the lab to give to people for Christmas presents. It suddenly struck me that this was the first time in probably two months I’d visited the photo lab and got any prints done and considering I shoot photographs most days of the week that’s quite a long time. I think there is something special about a printed photograph. Maybe I’m just a sad old romantic but hanging or pinning a print on the wall or placing a photo of a loved one in your wallet is far more rewarding than emailing one to aunt fanny! I would like to explore the whole aspect of printing a fair bit more on this blog . The digital age has brought lots of new options as regards turning your digital virtual images into something more physical and tactile but before we get into all of that I just want to find out if I’m the only person who fails to progress my photos into physical form (I mean print them!!). So beloved reader have your vote and add your thoughts into the comments section. I’ve got a feeling there are going to be a few of us who rarely print?!?

How often do you get prints of your photos?
